ORIGINAL COMIC ART

Original comic art is the art published and used to produce comic books and comic strips. Original comic art is typically black and white and drawn on art board.

In order to meet publishing deadlines, typically there are two artists. The first is a "penciller" that provides the layouts and detail to illustrate the story. The second is the "inker", who enhances the art and darkens it in the process.

This allows the finished art to be completely and submitted to the publisher more quickly. In some rare instances, an artist may be able to produce the art quickly enough to do both the pencils and the inks.

Original art is a one of a kind item.

Yes. They're real and they are spectacular !

In the traditional method of publishing, color is added to photostats of the original art during the publishing process. In recent years, the original comic art is scanned as a digital image with colors added via computer. Some artists will used the digitized art directly from the pencils, eliminating the need for an inker. The end result is usually an air-brushed art effect.

In the golden age of comic books, most of the original art was recycled for paper during the first and second world wars. As such, most of the original art has been destroyed or lost forever.

ANIMATION CELS

Animation cels are usually hand painted images on acetate used in the making of cartoons or specialty art.

What makes animation art collectible is the hand painted coloring. In addition, fans of animation art enjoy the cache of owning a piece of art that was used in the production of the cartoon or film.

Although there may be similar cels used in a scene to simulate live action movement in the film, an original animation cel is one of a kind art.

Hand painted cels are rapidly being replaced by computer generated graphics. While the prints are still works of art, they are not considered original art.

In recent years, animation studios such as Disney, Warner Brothers, Pixar and Dreamworks, have been issuing limited edition sericels to meet public demand.

With computer generated images, there are no original cels. Sericel art are prints with limited production runs and numbered.

For example, a cel numbered 37/500 would denote the cel as number 37 of 500 produced. Again, this type of art is not considered original art. Another way to view original art is number 1 of 1 produced.

In the golden age of animation and comics, paper and acetate were often recycled or destroyed during the war. In the case of Snow White, Disney studio animators often "cleaned up" the paint of the production cels and re-used the acetate for the next animated feature. The scarce nature of vintage art made these items more desirable and collectible works of mainstream modern art.

I am always willing to trade some of my animation art for select high quality original comic art work you may have.

Why Collect Original Works of Art ?

People collect art for different reasons. Most recently, art has been an investment vehicle for some collectors.

Supply and demand will always dictate the price of the art. There will be times where demand for original art from a "hot" artist or animation cels from a popular cartoon series will propel demand to unbelievable heights. Prices for art will sky-rocket overnight. For some, the demand for the art will "cool" and prices will drop or level off.

My recommendation to novice art collectors or speculators is to collect what you enjoy looking at regardless of what your budget is. This way if you can't re-sell the art, you can at least hang the art work on your wall and appreciate it.
